This book was inspired by some of the mobile Gacha-type games that I like to occasionally play, where you need to collect "Heroes" that come from random drawings or summonings; in this case, the random Heroes are monsters and traps that the Dungeon Core can use in his dungeon!

There are stats, character progression, and other LitRPG/GameLit elements in this Dungeon Core story. In addition, there are some probability tables that are separated into footnotes, which can be perused at leisure or ignored completely; either way, they will not affect your enjoyment of the story!

In a world dictated by probabilities, Clay was an anomaly
Thousands of Heroes protect the land, defending against the periodic incursions by gigantic monsters known as World Threats. This was the way it had always been and Clay Shuntwise was perfectly fine with that. Running deliveries for his family’s shop in the sleepy town of Renton, the young teenager barely even thought about Heroes and their role in keeping the world safe.
That was, at least, until the world came crashing down on him.
Reborn into the brand-new and unfamiliar form of a Dungeon Core, Clay struggles through learning more about Heroes and the dungeons they delve through to get stronger. According to the guide that was trying to help him understand his new life, however, because he was a former Hero, Clay should already know most of what he needed to succeed; all of the finer parts regarding the relationship between Heroes and dungeons, including information about probabilities and drop rates, should be common knowledge.
The problem? Despite wishing that he had been that lucky in his past life, Clay had never been a Hero…but now he might be forced to become one, though not quite in the way he ever expected.
This book contains Dungeon Core, LitRPG, and GameLit elements including dungeon construction and defense, monster summoning, character progression, and a game-like interface. In addition, many of the probabilities the world is based upon are similar to Gacha-type mechanics. Contains no profanity, harems, or explicit sexual content.

  1. I'll leave the same review here that I did on Amazon.

    1 Star.

I'm a big fan of Brooks' Crafter Dungeon series and so went into this with high hopes. I was sorely disappointed. The MC has no redeeming qualities other than he likes numbers, which I suppose works for him being a dungeon in a world where being a dungeon is just playing a Gacha game. The Gacha elements actually turned me off completely because it removes any real agency from the MC outside of basic resource management, gaining and spending currency. He has no control over any of his monster development, and (spoiler) the cat "gag" goes on for way too long.

Furthermore, when I read Dungeon Core style novels, I tend to read them for the actual DUNGEON. This book spent more than half it's duration on the "heroes", who were overwhelmingly dull, and on their mechanics. Very little effort went into the actual "Dungeon" over the whole book, just three rooms with some slap-dash gatherings of the randomly generated monsters he'd been given.

Last relatively minor but still important grievance: the title of the book is "Dungeon of Chance: Even Odds" when by it's very nature, any Gacha game is weighted against the user. Nothing in the entire book was "even". And the "Dungeon of Chance" made me think going into this that the MC Dungeon would be somehow unique, but in this world, EVERY dungeon is a gacha game. Disappointing all around.

I will continue to read Mr. Brook's Crafting Dungeon series, but I will be giving any further books in this series a hard pass.

    1. I'm sorry this book didn't work for you :( I was trying to add some neat Gacha game mechanics that haven't really been seen much in the genre, but it doesn't work for everybody! I'm glad to hear you enjoy my Dungeon Crafting series -- because I have a new book in the series coming out in 3 weeks or so :)
